Clinical Services

Arthroplasty
Our units at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital and Greys Hospital deliver a specialized service to a large number of patients presenting with severe joint arthritis and deformity. We perform a high volume of complex primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty for patients presenting with osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis, osteonecrosis and other common joint pathologies.

Arthroscopy
Knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist and ankle arthroscopy are performed at various centers across KZN. Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, ACL reconstruction and ankle fusion are some of the common procedures performed using keyhole surgery and modern, evidence-based surgical techniques and implants. All of our teaching institutions are equipped with high definition arthroscopic stacks and instruments.

Paediatric Orthopaedics
Our units are based at King Edward VIII Hospital, and Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital in Durban, and Grey’s Hospital in Pietermaritzburg. We offer a comprehensive paediatric orthopaedic surgery service which includes the management of musculoskeletal trauma and infections, developmental and congenital deformities including clubfoot, and the orthopaedic manifestations of neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy and spinal dysraphism.

Spine
Our spinal orthopaedics units offers expert, personalized care to patients with a wide range of back and neck conditions, including treatment for spinal arthritis, trauma, infective and inflammatory conditions, disc degeneration, spinal deformities and tumours. We are a centre of excellence and we endeavour to integrate traditional surgical methods with the latest minimally invasive techniques. This put us in a pole position to provide full-spectrum care from routine cervical, thoracic and lumbar surgery to complex spinal reconstruction and revision surgeries. Our aims are to take excellent care of paediatric and adult patients, advance our field through research and train the future generation of spine surgeons.

Tumor, Sepsis & Reconstruction

Orthopaedic Trauma
Road accidents and violent crime contribute to the high incidence of trauma in Kwazulu-Natal. Our surgeons and trainees are exposed to a broad spectrum of traumatic injuries ranging from complex open fractures of the tibia to neck of femur fractures in the elderly. Trauma consultants play a pivotal role in ensuring that our patients receive timeous and effective fracture fixation using modern surgical implants to ensure fracture union and early return to work. Surgeons across different hospitals and sub specialities often collaborate to ensure optimum patient outcome.
